Milestone Systems has expanded its XProtect and Arcules video management platforms with features aimed at the administration of camera systems, access permissions, video storage and operational records. The changes address deployments that combine onsite equipment with cloud services, including hybrid installations that require centralized oversight across different parts of an environment.

The company’s XProtect 2026 R2 update adds notes to camera views in Smart Client. Operators can use those notes to document location details, shift handoffs and instructions associated with a camera. Administrators manage the information centrally through XProtect Management Client, giving organizations a way to maintain operational guidance alongside the relevant video view rather than relying solely on separate documentation.

Audit and permission management

XProtect 2026 R2 also brings together audit, system and rule records in a log-management feature. The consolidated records are intended to support troubleshooting, reviews of system activity and compliance reporting. The feature can connect with third-party monitoring and log-management systems, allowing the records to be incorporated into broader operational or security workflows.

Milestone has additionally changed how permissions can be applied when new equipment is added. New cameras and other devices can inherit the access rights assigned to their group, reducing the need to configure permissions individually. For integrators and administrators, that places greater emphasis on the structure of device groups when designing or maintaining a system, although the announcement does not specify a change to the underlying access model.

  • XProtect 2026 R2: camera-view notes, centralized note administration and consolidated audit, system and rule records.
  • Device administration: new cameras and devices can inherit permissions from their assigned group.
  • Arcules: cloud backup, sensor integration, encrypted gateway-to-camera connections and additional hybrid-system controls.

Mapping planned for a later release

Milestone also announced a mapping capability for future Smart Client releases. The planned feature will place camera locations, alarms, connected devices and live video into geographic and floor-plan views. Operators will be able to choose nearby cameras from a map and open live video. Because the mapping capability is described as planned for later releases, it should not be treated as part of the current XProtect 2026 R2 feature set.

On the Arcules side, Cloud Backup for Edge Gateways stores a lower-resolution secondary video stream offsite. The feature is positioned as an additional storage path for systems using Arcules Edge Gateways, rather than as a replacement for the primary video stream described in the platform update.

Arcules has also added an integration with Triton Sensors. Environmental and occupancy data from the sensors can be combined with video so users can create alarms, rules and events that link sensor activity to video. That gives system operators a way to associate conditions in a monitored area with corresponding surveillance footage, without Milestone specifying particular sensor thresholds or deployment types.

Additional Arcules changes

Other Arcules updates include automatic HTTPS encryption between gateways and supported cameras, improvements to local video streaming and playback, and changes to diagnostics and alarm-access controls for hybrid systems. Browser-based monitoring of multiple XProtect installations is available through XProtect Remote Manager under Care Plus. Together, the changes extend the management layer around distributed video systems while separating features that are available in the current updates from mapping functions Milestone has reserved for future Smart Client releases.
