Hillwood partners with Base Power to offer home battery backup across North Texas communities

Hillwood Communities will make Base Power battery systems available to nearly 6,500 eligible homes across three North Texas developments, expanding to an estimated 9,500 homes at full buildout and coordinating with utility partner CoServ.

Hillwood Communities has announced a partnership with Austin-based Base Power to offer residential battery backup systems to homeowners in three North Texas developments, with scope to expand as the communities grow. The initial rollout will make systems available to nearly 6,500 eligible new and existing homeowners in the Treeline, Pecan Square and Harvest communities, and Hillwood said that at full buildout about 9,500 homes across the three developments will have access to the systems.

What the rollout covers

The program covers residents in:

  • Treeline in Justin
  • Pecan Square in Northlake
  • Harvest in Argyle and Northlake

Hillwood said participating homeowners will receive preferred pricing; the announcement did not specify rates. Base Power will manage enrollment, scheduling and installation logistics for the program.

How the batteries will be used

Base Power’s residential batteries are intended to serve two purposes: providing backup power during outages and aggregating distributed capacity to help utilities meet peak demand. Base coordinates individual home batteries into a larger networked resource that can be dispatched to supply power when the grid requires additional capacity.

“From winter storms and extreme summer heat to tornadoes, North Texans know how quickly severe weather can disrupt daily life,” said Andrew Pieper, senior vice president of Hillwood Communities.

Pieper continued: “Through this partnership, we’re giving homeowners a cost-effective way to prepare for power outages while supporting the broader electric grid.”

Utility relationships and expansion plans

CoServ, which serves all three communities, is identified as the utility partner in the announcement. Hillwood and Base Power also plan to extend the partnership to future CoServ-served Hillwood developments, including Landmark in Denton and Lantern in Pilot Point.

Base Power was founded in 2023 and is headquartered in Austin. Zach Dell, a Base co-founder, said the company is focused on deploying “energy infrastructure that can add capacity where people live” and that Hillwood’s developments allow the company to scale that model.

“We’re building energy infrastructure that can add capacity where people live,” said Dell.

Hillwood Communities President Fred Balda said the partnership could expand to other markets as Base becomes ready to serve them.

Hillwood said Base will handle customer-facing tasks including enrollment and scheduling. The announcement noted participating homeowners will receive preferred pricing but did not disclose specific pricing or financing terms.

Hillwood and Base framed the deployment as both a homeowner resilience measure and an opportunity to aggregate distributed energy resources to support grid needs during peaks or emergencies. The companies said the model could be applied to future Hillwood developments as Base expands its service footprint.
