STMicroelectronics has launched ST MatterConnect, a personalization service designed to load authentication credentials into secure components used in Matter-compatible smart-home products before shipment. The company says the service is intended to reduce the operational work involved in provisioning connected devices and help equipment makers bring new products to market more quickly.
The offering is built around the company’s ST25DA-C dynamic NFC tag and STSAFE-A120 secure element. ST says its factories can generate and inject the credentials internally, rather than requiring each customer to establish and operate its own secure provisioning infrastructure. The service covers the required Matter Device Attestation Certificate, or DAC, along with cryptographic keys, product and version information, and customer-specific personalization data.
Credential loading moves into production
Matter device authentication depends on attestation data that allows a device to establish its identity during commissioning. ST MatterConnect is intended to place that information into the relevant secure hardware as part of the manufacturing process. STMicroelectronics said the service uses its security infrastructure and certified secure factories to handle that work before products are delivered to customers.
“With ST MatterConnect, we deliver Matter-ready devices with the necessary certificates and keys preloaded, allowing customers to reduce operational costs and complexity, as well as accelerate time to market for new products,” said Sylvain Fidelis, Multi-Market Business Line Manager, STMicroelectronics.
For manufacturers, the service combines credential generation, device personalization and secure-chip provisioning in one production workflow. ST said equipment makers can use its position as an approved Product Attestation Authority and Product Attestation Intermediate to support trust and compliance without building equivalent provisioning capabilities internally. The announcement does not identify specific customer products or provide a shipment date for devices using the service.
Two hardware paths for Matter authentication
| Component | Role described by STMicroelectronics | Connection or commissioning function |
|---|---|---|
| ST25DA-C | Dynamic NFC tag | Supports the Matter device NFC commissioning flow |
| STSAFE-A120 | Secure element | Connects to the host through an I²C interface and provides authentication and IoT security services |
STMicroelectronics said the ST25DA-C supports Matter’s NFC commissioning flow. That flow is designed to help users connect devices from different ecosystems, including smart lightbulbs, smart plugs, smoke alarms, security cameras and presence sensors, without relying on multiple proprietary hubs. The company positions the NFC component as part of the device-commissioning path rather than as a replacement for the broader Matter fabric or controller infrastructure.
The STSAFE-A120 takes a different role within the product design. Connected to the device host through an I²C interface, it stores sensitive information such as security keys and performs commands associated with Matter authentication. ST also describes it as providing security services for IoT equipment, including establishing secure connections and verifying integrity, with the processing performed on tamper-resistant hardware.
Provisioning as a manufacturing consideration
The announcement places device attestation alongside the physical and software elements that manufacturers must coordinate when developing Matter products. Credential loading, product identification and version data all need to correspond with the device being produced. By offering those steps as a factory service, STMicroelectronics is targeting companies that want Matter support without creating a separate internal system for secure personalization.
- ST MatterConnect loads Matter authentication data before devices ship.
- The service supports the ST25DA-C and STSAFE-A120 secure components.
- Data handled by the service includes DACs, cryptographic keys, product and version information, and customer personalization.
For the professional smart-home channel, the announcement is relevant upstream of installation: the service concerns how Matter products are authenticated and prepared by their manufacturers, not a new installer-facing controller or commissioning application. Its stated purpose is to simplify production and help connected-device makers deliver products with the credentials required for Matter authentication already stored in secure hardware.
