Apple is reportedly developing an AI-driven home robot that could combine FaceTime calling, lighting control and other household functions in a device priced at $1,000 or more. The company is said to be targeting a 2027 launch, although development delays could move the release to 2028.
The project is reportedly known internally as J595. Apple could market the device as HomeView Ultra, following the company’s new HomeView stationary smart display. The reported product would therefore extend Apple’s emerging home-device strategy from a fixed display into a platform capable of moving or repositioning itself while carrying out household-control tasks.
A long-running hardware project
Development of the robot is said to date back to 2018, when former Apple CEO Tim Cook approved the project. Under current CEO John Ternus, engineers are reportedly working to expand the robot’s role beyond FaceTime calls and lighting control. The effort includes software refinement and the integration of additional artificial-intelligence capabilities.
For professional integrators, the reported functions place the project in the same broad operating environment as a smart-home control display, but the available details do not establish a dealer program, an integration framework or compatibility with third-party control systems. Apple has not announced the product’s final name, specifications, availability or channel strategy in the material describing the project.
Small robotics group, larger software effort
The reported staffing split highlights the different development challenges involved. Apple’s robotics team is said to include approximately 10 “true roboticists”, while about 300 people are reportedly working on the software side. The project has remained in development for years as Apple works on the physical platform and the software needed to support its intended home functions.
- Internal project name: J595
- Potential product name: HomeView Ultra
- Reported target: 2027
- Possible delay: 2028
- Reported price: $1,000 or more
A separate household-robot effort
Ternus is also backing a separate Apple project focused on household tasks such as folding clothes. That effort would likely require robotic arms and manipulators, distinguishing it from the reported HomeView-related device. The two projects indicate that Apple’s robotics work extends beyond a smart display or mobile control interface, although neither product has been formally announced for sale.
The reported timeline remains provisional. A 2027 launch is the current target described for the home robot, while development issues could push it to 2028. Until Apple publishes final product, software and channel details, the project remains a reported future addition to the company’s smart-home portfolio rather than an available installation product.
