Amazon’s latest Echo Dot adds functions that previously required separate elements in a smart-home installation. The updated compact speaker includes a built-in smart-home hub supporting Zigbee, Matter and Thread, as well as eero Wi-Fi extender functionality and Amazon’s new AZ3 processor.
The device is available now in Graphite, Glacier White, Agave Green and Coral Pink for $100. A Kids Echo Dot, offered with Penguin and Octopus designs and a year of Amazon Kids+, starts at $110. Amazon has not described the Echo Dot as a dealer-only product; the announcement presents it as a consumer Alexa device.
One device, three installation functions
For a connected-home system, the most significant change is the integrated hub. The Echo Dot can connect with thousands of compatible lights, locks and thermostats without a separate hub, according to Amazon. Its support for Zigbee, Matter and Thread puts three commonly encountered smart-home technologies inside the same endpoint, although device compatibility and system behavior will still depend on the products being connected.
The Dot also operates as an eero Wi-Fi extender. Amazon says it can add up to 1,000 feet of coverage when connected to an existing eero network. That requirement is important for installations: the extension feature is tied to an eero setup rather than functioning as a general-purpose wireless access point for any network.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Smart-home hub | Zigbee, Matter and Thread |
| Network extension | eero coverage of up to 1,000 feet with an existing eero network |
| Processor | Amazon AZ3 with AI voice processing |
| Price | $100 for the Echo Dot; $110 for the Kids Echo Dot |
Voice and occupancy features
Amazon says the AZ3 processor is designed to handle AI voice processing directly on the device. The company says this should make conversations with Alexa+ more natural by reducing the need to send every command to the cloud. The updated Echo Dot also adds a fourth microphone for voice recognition across a room and enhanced Voice ID support to distinguish between household members and provide more personalized responses.
Omnisense remains part of the platform. The technology can detect room temperature and human presence, allowing compatible devices to respond to conditions such as someone entering a room. Amazon gives automated lighting and temperature responses as examples. For an integrator, those functions place sensing, voice control and wireless connectivity in the same physical product rather than requiring a separate presence sensor for every basic routine.
Audio and family versions
The speaker uses a new full-range driver that Amazon claims produces clearer vocals and 50% more bass than the previous model. The Kids Echo Dot retains the core features of the standard version and adds a year of Amazon Kids+, which includes age-appropriate Audible audiobooks, ad-free music, podcasts and other content. Parents can control the children’s experience, including clock faces and alarm settings.
The new Echo Dot therefore sits at the intersection of several installation categories: voice control, smart-home protocols, network coverage and basic environmental sensing. Its practical role in a project will depend on whether the home already uses eero and whether the integrator is incorporating Alexa, Matter, Zigbee or Thread devices. Amazon’s announcement establishes the hardware and availability, but does not identify a professional-dealer program or integration-management tools for custom installers.
